COM-350 Topics in Public Controversy

The study of communication is at its most fraught as we enter into areas of communication in which there are substantial public disagreements. Simultaneously, the contingent political world demands that we be able to communicate about, fully explore, and render judgements regarding these pressing concerns. From the role of dissent within a democracy, to the sociopolitical conflicts we read about on the front page of the daily news, this seminar will explore how controversy, conflict, and disagreement are a vital aspect of vibrant and functioning culture through focus on a specific public controversy or topic of public controversy. Topics will vary with the expertise of the instructor, and the rise and fall of various concerns in our shared public cultures.
