ENG-337 American Poetry and Poetics

This seminar focuses on the evolution of American poetry and poetics from the 18th-century to the present, with particular emphasis on 20th-century movements and developments. In addition to studying poems, we will consider the theories and beliefs about language that poets have articulated to justify their experimentation with poetic form. Students will read and write closely about poems in terms of their formal elements, such as figurative language, sound effects, and visual arrangement.
