SOC-340 Cultural Criminology
This course introduces students to the burgeoning field of cultural criminology, which views crime and its control as cultural, creative and contested constructs. By its nature, cultural criminology is kaleidoscopic and incorporates perspectives from fields such as cultural geography, anthropology, philosophy, postmodern critical theory, action research, media theory and urban studies. Students will converse with and apply this interdisciplinary literature by exploring how crime and its control intersect with late modernity, consumer culture, subcultural style, performance/display, pleasure and survival. Students produce significant written and visual work with latitude provided for creative expression. Prerequisites: SOC-330 or instructor permission
