GSM 504D Special Topics

Human rights issues are a growing area of concern for companies and investors worldwide. This course provides a context for how companies can address political, social, and economic rights in their value chain and within their spheres of influence. The instructor will provide an in-depth look at tools to assist companies to comply with human rights, including several UN frameworks. Students will analyze case studies of good practice with a view to understanding management tools such as human rights policies, due diligence efforts, and grievance mechanisms. The course will examine human rights through a gender perspective, looking at instruments that promote the rights of women. This course will be open to both graduate and under-graduate students in the following areas of study: political science, management, history, social work, communications, gender studies, and public policy. The semester-long course will address the following topics: I. What are human rights and how do they apply to business? II. The Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: A Framework III. Corporate policies on human rights IV. Human rights due diligence V. Managing in areas of conflict
