AST 513 Black Struggle for Schooling

Examines African Americans struggle for the right to an education in the United States, focusing on the content and context (historical and sociopolitical) of specific struggles. Selected topics include: the pursuit of literacy by enslaved Africans; the ex-slaves campaign for universal education in the South; African American literary societies; African American education in the Jim Crow South; Black education in the post-civil rights era; and African Americans struggle for the right to maintain their language.
