SW 438 Alcohol, Drugs & Social Work Practice

SW438: Alcohol, Drugs & Social Work Practice The focus of the class is on exploring the nature, etiology and treatment of substance abuse disorders and how they relate to social work practice. Students are introduced to different theories that frame substance abuse treatment models, including harm reduction neurobiology and the traditional medical model. Students explore self-help programs such as AA and NA and other modes of treatment, including CBT, motivational interviewing, outpatient treatment and psychopharmacology. Policy, prevention and education issues are also addressed. Prerequisites: SW401A, SW411A, and SW421A. This course meets the requirement for a clinical practice elective.
