TS3001 Fundamental Principles of Naval Architecture

The geometry, hydrostatics and hydrodynamics of floating and submerged bodies are covered in this course. Longitudinal and transverse stability of floating bodies is examined. Other topics include: hull girder strength, Froude similarity, wave and skin friction resistance and powering determination. An introduction to passive survivability principles is also presented.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Calculate hydrostatic properties for floating bodies given their geometry.
  • Perform hydrostatic calculations for floating bodies given their hydrostatic properties.
  • Calculate the metacentric height and establish conditions of stability for a floating body.
  • Quantify the effects of shifting weights vertically and horizontally.
  • Set up calculations with regards to inclining experiments and ship docking.
  • Calculate the floodable length curve for simple geometries.
  • Calculate the effects of free surfaces on stability.
  • Calculate and plot loading, shear force, and bending moment curves.
  • Calculate the maximum bending stress in a midship section given its geometry.
