HIST 3845 WITCHCRAFT IN THE WESTERN TRADITION

The history of the belief in and fear of witches in Western civilization from ancient times to the present with an emphasis on the witch trials in Europe and America from the fifteenth through the seventeenth centuries. Readings will focus on the intellectual, cultural, and social factors shaping the witch trials and the eventual decline of those trials.
