SW 5301 SOCIAL WELFARE POLICY I

This is a two-part course offered in sequence to provide a basic knowledge and understanding of social welfare's history in the United States and the present structure of service delivery. Course content covers knowledge about international instruments that serve to protect human rights and their consistency with the evolution of social welfare and social work as a profession; current influences of social welfare policies on the delivery of services to meet human needs; and social work's role in influencing social welfare policies to promote economic and social justice. Issues of inequality, discrimination and oppression on individuals, groups and communities as well as theoretical models that provide basis for understanding policy development and its impact on service delivery are examined.
