PSRT 4271 THE ROLE OF FAMILIES IN REHAB

It has been estimated that more than half of the consumers discharge from psychiatric hospitals return to live with their families. An even larger number utilize families as a key component of their support systems. Families therefore can play an important role in the community adjustment of people who have a psychiatric disability. This course will introduce students to the various ways that family members experience the mental illness of a relative. It will also provide students with knowledge about the various services that families want and need, as well as developing the practical skills needed to provide these services. Finally, students will learn how family members can be engaged to help consumers remain in the community and achieve rehabilitation goals. Knowledge and skills will be imparted through classroom lectures, guest speakers, small group exercises and role playing.
