PA 5005 SERVICE LEARNING AND GOVERNMENTAL LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS

This course provides an overview of the history, scope, theories, and applications of the field of public administration, including the perspectives on public service, and civic and community engagement. The community landscape analysis will be introduced to identify the needs of a community of interest and determine how those needs can best be serviced.  Using the results of the analysis, students will engage in a service-learning project to effectuate positive change in the community. Service learning is a form of experiential education using community service to provide “real world” learning while meeting societal needs. The landscape analysis and service learning serve as the frame for other learnings in this class which include topics such as government and nonprofit structure and function, the public administrator as a public servant, community engagement and advocacy, politics and policy, rules and the regulatory environment, and ethics for public administrators.
