PAS 5430 CLINICAL MEDICINE ACROSS THE LIFESPAN

The fourth of a series of courses designed to provide the student with an approach to diseases encountered in the practice of medicine. Building on the knowledge gained in Clinical Medicine Courses PAS*5400 and PAS*5410 students will be exposed to a focused approach to the care of patients across the lifespan including obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and pediatric, adolescent and geriatric populations. Emphasis is on optimizing the health of the patient. Case presentations and simulation activities will be used to allow students to practice the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.
The OB/GYN unit introduces the student to the fundamentals of prenatal care, childbirth and post partum care as well as obstetrical and gynecologic problems commonly encountered in clinical practice.
The pediatric and adolescent unit familiarizes the students with the care of the child from birth to adulthood with an emphasis on normal growth and development and commonly encountered childhood diseases. The importance of family involvement in the care of the child addressed.
Special concerns of the elderly patient is the focus of the geriatrics unit including the normal aging process, health and wellness, and a discussion of diseases commonly encountered in the geriatric population.
