PAS 5220 PRINCIPLES OF PATIENT ASSESSMENT AND EDUCATION TWO
This is the third of a three course series designed to provide the student with the skills necessary to effectively evaluate and educate patients. This course is sequenced with the PAS 5420 Clinical Medicine course, which addresses disorders of the same body systems. This course will focus on the development of the necessary physical examination skills related to the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, as well as the make and female genitalia. Students will also learn how to evaluate the mental status of a patient. Laboratory sessions and clinical experiences allow students to practice their skills on each other, simulators and standardized and actual patients. Patient education principles as well as the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention are defined and discussed in both lecture and small group sessions and practiced in a clinical setting. Students prepare a health promotion/disease prevention education tool based on the needs of a clinical site and present it to the class as a whole. Students spend time at clinical sites where they have the opportunity to continue to develop effective patient-centered communication skills, refine their ability to obtain a full history, practice their physical examination skills and gain exposure to and appreciation for the members of the health care team.

PAS*5210 and Successful completion of the second semester of the PA Program.
