NURS 5510 SCHOOL NURSING/HEALTH EDUCATION INTERN- SHIP

The culminating experience in the School Nurse Program includes supervised field activities in health education and school nurse practice, in approved primary and secondary school settings. Certified school nurses, qualified health teachers and internship coordinators will supervise students in experiences associated with State- mandated programs. The course also includes the opportunity to prepare and teach health education in the classroom or in the other school related health-teaching venues. Students must apply for placement by the fourth (4th) week of the semester prior to registration for the course. Prerequisite(s): COMPLETION OF ALL CORE COURSES IN THE SCHOOL NURSE CURRICULUM, INCLUDING NURS 5501-SCHOOL NURSING I. 2.PROFESSIONAL CPR CERTIFICATION FROM EITHER THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION OR AMERICAN RED CROSS. Co-Requsites(s): NURS 5502-SCHOOL NURSING II (N.B. THIS COURSE MAY BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO INTERNSHIP ENROLLMENT) AND HED 5500 - SCHOOL NURSING/HEALTH EDUCATION INTERNSHIP.

This University-supervised practicum provides the student with opportunities to apply the Key Principles of the NASN's 21st Century School Nursing Framework in approved primary and secondary school settings, including opportunities to participate in the delivery of state-mandated school health services.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of NURS*3010 & NURS*3200 (or equivalent transfer courses), NURS*5501, NURS*5502, current CPR/AED certification, current individual malpractice insurance & clinical clearance (including flu vaccination). Students must apply for clinical placement at least 4 weeks prior to course registration. Course includes a total of 60 hours of clinical practice.
