An examination of modern Germany national identity and its constituent parts:memory of the medieval Holy Roman Empire, confrontation with modern France, the 1848 Revolution, Prussia's rapid industrialization, Bismarck's formation of the German nation-state, World War I, the Weimer Republic, the Third Reich, and Germany's postwar economic miracle and cultural malaise.
