SURT 102 Surgical concepts
An introduction and overview of the profession and history of surgical technology. This course also includes an introduction to the operating room (OR), hospital administration, hospital facilities and the chain of command. With a focus on patient safety, the surgical patient is discussed including the OR environment, environmental hazards and safe working conditions. An introduction to microbiology and infection control will be explored as well as control of the OR physical facilities. The course includes pre-operative patient preparation, intraoperative patient monitoring devices, intraoperative patient preparation, post-operative patient complications and discharge instructions. Research of legal and ethical concepts and risk management as they apply to working in a health care field will be discussed in this course.

III. Catalog Course Description
An introduction and overview of the profession and history of surgical technology. With a focus on patient safety, the surgical patient is discussed including the OR environment, environmental hazards and safe working conditions. An introduction to microbiology and infection control will be explored as well as control of the OR physical facilities. - Describe the characteristics of the professional surgical technologist.
- Compare and contrast professional organizations related to the profession.
- Describe the credentialing options available to the surgical technologist
- Learn about surgical pioneers and their role in today’s modern medicine practice.
- Learn who our surgical patient is including specific special populations
- Discuss substance abuse in health care (workers and patients)
- Review Maslow’s theory
- Learn about the floor plan and the physical environment in the Operating suite
- Learn about the physical and environmental safety hazards as they relate to the operating suite.
- Discuss the “Pause” (Time out) and patient safety in the Operating room
- Discuss microbiology and infection control
- Learn how to safely position the surgical patient and the positioning devices
- Learn the anatomy of the abdominal wall and surgical incisions
