III. Catalog Course Description

In this course, students will build the knowledge necessary to construct solutions to problems using the concepts underlying most programming languages, including variables, conditional statements, loops, and functions. Emphasis will be placed on problem decomposition, research techniques, and best practices for generating well-documented, reusable code.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Explore the craft of computer programming.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the construction and typical use cases of the following basic programming building blocks: a. Variables b. Conditions and conditional statements c. Loops and looping conditions d. Functions e. Complex data structures
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze a given programming problem, decompose the problem into its component parts, and synthesize a solution to the problem using the basic programming building blocks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to debug and refactor programs.
