III. Catalog Course Description
An applied study of crops used for forage, their establishment, management, and use with special emphasis on hay, pasture, and silage crops in Idaho.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Explain how forage management strategies impact forage production yield and nutritive value.
- Understand the functional role forages play in herbivore livestock nutrition, and explain how forages are evaluated for their feeding value.
- Compare and contrast techniques of forage production and storage, including grazing, stockpiling, and hay and silage production.
- Demonstrate techniques to estimate the quantity of forage available in a given area.
- Develop and present a comprehensive plan and strategy to utilize manage intensive grazing effectively for a given livestock enterprise.
- Identify plant species commonly grown for forage and recognize their suitability and limitations in a forage production system in regards to climate, soil quality, and livestock use.
- Describe the basic techniques for growing forage crops, such as forage cultivar selection, stand establishment, pasture renovation, fertilization and weed control.
