III. Catalog Course Description

This course continues its emphasis on oral, listening, and writing skills in order to complete acquisition of basic structures of the language. In addition, students study idioms and vocabulary used in ordinary situations. This course continues its introduction to French culture, especially as culture is reflected in language choice.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Initiate and sustain conversations in which they ask and answer questions, give and receive directions, introduce themselves, and report observations and information at a level appropriate to their language exposure and experience.
  • Demonstrate creativity in choosing alternative methods (i.e., vocabulary, pantomime, or drawing) in social and/or professional situations where their communication skills have not been effective.
  • Integrate various culturally appropriate behaviors into their conversations.
  • Attain a conversational level of High-Novice (based on ACTFL standards).
  • Assignments vary and reflect instructional methods designed to assist students to reach the course objectives.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

In this French 102 course, students will become proficient in continuing grammar, including: demonstrative pronouns, passé composé with avoir, indirect object pronouns, regular and irregular –re verbs, passé composé with être, direct object pronouns, adverbs, imparfait, passé composé –vs- imparfait, irregular verbs savoir, connaitre, venir, devoir, vouloir, pouvoir, comparatives and superlatives of adjectives and adverbs, double object pronouns, reflexive verbs, reflexive idioms, passé composé of reflexive verbs, pronouns y and en. Students will become familiar with French Culture which will include Carnaval, le 14 juillet, la mode en France, Coco Chanel, Tahiti, le Musée d’Orsay, les Vacances, les Alpes, le ski, le logement, le Chateau Frontenac, l’intérieur de logements, le Vieux Carré, Faire des courses, les fromages français, les repas, la couscousmania, la maladie, l’Occitane, la Sécurité sociale,and L’hotel des Invalides. Students will be novice proficient French speakers according to ACTFL guidelines.
