COMM 220 Intercultural Communication

This course will provide an understanding of the dynamics of intercultural communication. Emphasis will be placed on communication perceptions, self-awareness, and worldviews. Students will develop recognition of their own cultural communication style and the ways it differs from other cultures. By examining barriers to intercultural communication, such as ethnocentrism and stereotyping, students will develop cultural sensitivity and become more competent in communicating interculturally.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course will provide an understanding of the dynamics of intercultural communication. Emphasis will be placed on communication perceptions, self-awareness, and worldviews. Students will develop recognition of their own cultural communication style and the ways it differs from other cultures. By examining barriers to intercultural communication, such as ethnocentrism and stereotyping, students will develop cultural sensitivity and become more competent in communicating interculturally.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Synthesize how different cultural values can influence everyday communication, as evidenced by class discussion, papers, and critical thinking exercises.
  • Describe how cultural influences have helped to shape historical events, as evidenced by class discussions and quizzes.
  • Analytically compare and contrast different culture-based verbal and nonverbal communication styles, as evidenced in course papers, class discussions, and popular films.
  • Examine intercultural conflicts and the role of communication within these issues, as evidenced by class discussion and quizzes.
  • Explain how intercultural communication influences business environments, education settings, health care, and tourist experiences, as evidenced by class discussions.
  • Demonstrate respect for diverse ways of communicating in different cultural situations, as evidenced by response papers.
  • Compose research areas of interest in intercultural communication in a scholarly manner, as evidenced by a scholarly researched paper.
  • Develop areas of interest in intercultural communication in a scholarly manner, as evidenced by a presentation.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Required course content includes identifying cultural norms within one’s own culture, cultural norms of other cultures, historical conflict influenced by differing cultural norms, and intercultural sensitivity.

VI. Delivery Methodologies

Required Assignments

Response papers that demonstrate the student’s ability to synthesize specific concepts. A scholarly researched paper addressing an Intercultural Communication concept. A presentation of the scholarly research conducted by the student.

Required Exams

There will be evaluations of response papers and of the scholarly researched paper. An evaluation of the presentation. Graded quizzes and exams will also be scored.
