CABW 201 Finishing Techniques

This course offers an in-depth study of the many ways a woodworker can finish their woodworking projects. This course will cover machining techniques that apply to finish work as well as spray booth procedures and applications. Students will learn the use of abrasives and sanding machines, grits to speed. Students will study all types of brushed, wiped, spray and decorative finishes. Students will demonstrate use of sanding techniques and several finishes on sample task pieces as well as project cabinets, doors, etc.

  • Gain a solid understanding of the basics in finishing
  • Be able to show by projects and essays that students have and can display knowledge of finishing techniques
  • Practice finishing techniques in lab to enhance their skills
  • Have the knowledge of what is in the products they will be using, and how to avoid mistakes of mixtures
  • Learn how to prepare for finish
  • Know and understand finishing techniques for furniture, cabinetry and finish carpentry
  • Know and understand brushing, wiping and spraying of finishes
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of finish products
  • Build samples to use as practice pieces to apply finishes
  • Have the ability to finish cabinet projects for kitchen cabinets and furniture projects as well as samples
  • Know and understand repair techniques of different kinds and types of finish
  • Understanding flash points, re-coating times, etc.
