III. Catalog Course Description

This course provides instruction of Jazz dance movements, borrowed from other forms of dance, and includes exercise techniques and steps of jazz dance placed with contemporary music as an art form. Basic body terminology, French vocabulary, correct body alignment and simple combinations of jazz choreography will be introduced.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate progress toward master in technical movement kills and knowledge pertaining to Jazz dance as an art form at the beginning level
  • Increase and apply strength and stamina.
  • Increase and apply flexibility/range of joint motion
  • Grasp and retain the sequence of flexibility exercises, dance combinations and across the floor combinations
  • Move quickly from learning to performing; apply technique with a sense of "self"
  • Maintain a commitment to instruction and correction by observing carefully, listening actively, practicing, and assessing personal progress and improvement

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Instruct, demonstrate and lead movement exercises and choreography at the beginning level including stretch and strength exercises, across the floor combinations and jazz dance choreography Working French vocabulary when appropriate as it applies to dance instruction and discipline Observe daily work and progress in class and orally assess student achievement; add recommendations for improvement and correction Provide verbal and video feedback of student progress at midterm and final assessment Introduce a brief history of American Jazz Dance with reflection on well-known Jazz choreographers

VI. Delivery Methodologies

Required Assignments

Participation in a stage performance where students will be involved in creating a character reference through movement. Attendance and participation in class. Students are expected to be in every class. Learning to dance requires that the body do it. Students will not gain body awareness, strength, flexibility, or the ability to learn new movement or generate their own movement by hearing about what happened in class from a classmate or reading a book. There is no way to make up material or missed experiences. Students are granted 3 permissible absences and may make up one absence per semester by participating in (if appropriate) or observing and writing a one-page reflection of another movement class. Instructor must approve class make-up assignments.

Required Exams

Attendance and participation. Students will demonstrate progress toward mastery in technical movement skills, knowledge and understanding of dance vocabulary. Learn to memorize and reproduce choreographed sequences and show proficiency in performing movement for artistic expression in jazz at the intermediate level. Video assessment followed by a written self-evaluation paper.
