III. Catalog Course Description
This course provides the student with an overview of addiction, causes and consequences and their relation to the individual, family,
community, and society. Students will be introduced to the various alternatives regarding prevention, intervention, and treatment. This course will also explain the process of certification in the State of Idaho.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Understand and explain the drug classification system and to describe the various effects of mood altering substances, depending on class of drug.
- Will be able to describe causal factor of addiction based on various models.
- Discuss the pros and cons of issues related to drug regulations;
- Understand and describe the goals of drug prevention, intervention, treatment
- Describe the difference between prevention, intervention, treatment and community based self- help groups.
- Describe the requirements for certification to be a drug and alcohol counselor in the State of Idaho.

1. Exploration of various theories about the causes of addiction
2. Explore the impact of addiction on the individual, family, society and community both from a historical perspective, as well as currently.
3. Explore classifications of various drugs and the impact various on the brain, body, nervous system, etc.
4. Explore the goal of prevention and treatment
5. Describe the certification process of drug and alcohol counselors in the State of Idaho.

2) Learning Units (6 units which include mandatory reading assignments, discussion,
viewing videos or other activities and a quiz over the unit material)
3) Pick a Project (Choice of activities such as interviewing a counselor, movie review,
attending 12 step recovery groups in the community, research paper)
