This course offers an introductory overview of the possible causes and consequences of growing old from a biological, psychological, and social perspective. Focus is on the later years, and health issues therein. Individually and socially, the value of responsible lifestyle choices throughout the lifespan is emphasized. Prejudices, misconceptions, and special needs concerning aging will be explored.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course offers an introductory overview of the possible causes and consequences of growing old from a biological, psychological, and social perspective. Focus is on the later years, and health issues therein. Individually and socially, the value of responsible lifestyle choices throughout the lifespan is emphasized. Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Understand the major demographics of contemporary populations. .
  • Understand how factors of biology, psychological and social constructs interact to support healthy aging.
  • Identify lifestyle choices that affect (both positive and negative) the quality and longevity of life.
  • Understand age-related issues, and ageism

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Provide students with an overview of healthy aging through a variety of assignments and activities. Provide students real world knowledge through service learning projects and interview assignments.

Conduct and report on a lifestyle interview with a healthy elderly person Participate in an inter-generational service learning project.
