HHP-130 Introduction to Outdoor and Adventure Education
This course will provide an introduction to the theory and practice of outdoor and adventure education (OAE). We will explore the background of outdoor education, the historical basis of the field, theories of learning, and applications of this model of learning. We will then explore pedagogical applications of these fields, exploring the commonalities of all adventure-based learning, including structuring experiences, processing, and assessment. Finally, we will introduce the concept of risk management in outdoor and adventure education. The course will primarily be conducted as a seminar-style discussion of the readings, with a brief introduction by the professor. Each week will include a mini-lecture, a discussion, written reflection, and an active, in-class application of our learning.
