Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.
In the Medical Assisting Program, required Major Courses (courses with MED prefix) require a grade of "C" or higher to complete the program.
Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited medical assisting programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants' Certification Examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. Employment opportunities include physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.
Accreditation Statement
The Cleveland Community College Medical Assisting program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (http://www.caahep.org/) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Contact the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs at 25400 US Highway 19 North, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33763 or call 727-210-2350.
Admission and Selection Criteria
Admission to Medical Assisting is competitive among qualified applicants according to established criteria. There is a limited application period and exact admissions evaluation criteria are revised and updated annually. All Health Sciences applicants are required to attend an annual Health Sciences information session in order to declare a Health Sciences program of study. Health Sciences information session schedules are available in Student Affairs at 704.669.4081 or online at http://clevelandcc.edu/programs/how-to-apply/health-sciences/.
An admissions and selection rubric will be used to determine acceptance to the Medical Assisting program. Students not selected to the program may reapply for the next year by attending another Health Sciences Information session. All applications for admission must be updated annually. If one has applied previously, he or she must initiate the process again, including the ATI TEAS exam retesting.
CCC has established admissions and selection procedures to ensure students are admitted and selected in a consistent and equitable manner. The admissions and selection rubric are only intended to provide students with a checklist assisting in identifying program eligibility requirements, while outlining the admissions/selection process. This rubric is for student use only and does not serve as the official record of calculated points. Completion of these requirements will not guarantee admission to the program.
Admissions criteria to be completed prior to program deadline (Step 1 of Admission and Selection Rubric):
- Current application for admission: All Medical Assisting applicants must attend a Health Sciences Information session prior to being considered for admission and declaring Medical Assisting as their program of study
- Official high school transcript or GED
- Official college transcript(s) if you intend to earn transferable credit
- Satisfactory completion of MAT 003 or equivalent or exemption (per transcript)
- Satisfactory completion of ENG 002 or equivalent or exemption (per transcript)
Selection Process
- All general admission requirements must be met.
- If notified by the Admissions Office, eligible applicants report for the ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). The ATI TEAS is a standardized test that includes Reading, Math (including Algebra), Science, and English sections. It is designed specifically to assess students' preparedness to enter health science fields. There is a fee for the ATI TEAS exam.
- Conditional acceptance for admission is based on the selection criteria established on the Medical Assisting Admissions and Selection Rubric. Notification of conditional acceptance, along with the health examination information will be provided.
- If indicated, an interview/program group information session will be scheduled.
Post-Acceptance Process
- Notification of final acceptance will be sent by the Medical Assisting Program Coordinator after successful completion of all orientation requirements, and favorable results of physical examinations.
- All students accepted into the Medical Assisting Program must acquire a criminal background check and drug testing with CastleBranch. Accepted students will be notified of the CastleBranch information. Criminal background checks and drug testing are required by clinical facilities, who determine all clinical participation.
- All students accepted into the Medical Assisting Program are required to have malpractice insurance.
