LIS 466 Information Retrieval
This course covers all aspects of Information Retrieval (IR). In this class, students study technical foundations of text-based retrieval: IR models, system evaluation, improvements on retrieval through relevance feedback, human-computer interaction for IR, multimedia IR, and IR in the library, especially Web, library, and digital library applications. Some specific class topics include interactive information visualization, IR and multimedia, free-text searching and the integration of semantically-tagged records, language issues that form domain-specific retrieval research programs (e.g. bioinformatics, medical librarianship; latent semantic indexing, generalized vector model and Markov-chain clustering techniques). Prerequisite: LIS 488 or LIS 460.
