WELD 156 GMAW & FCAW

This course serves as an introductory and intermediate course to GMAW and FCAW processes. Students will learn the theory of and the techniques needed to properly set up and use GMAW and FCAW welding equipment safely. Students will weld the common joints found in the welding industry, in all positions using solid and flux cored wires using various material types. Students will develop the skills needed to take the American Welding Society SENSE certification tests for GMAW and FCAW welders. Principles of metallurgy associated with GMAW and FCAW welding processes will be taught.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course serves as an introductory and intermediate course to GMAW and FCAW processes. Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Utilizing CSI vehicles and components, the student will learn to:
  • Identify, understand, demonstrate, & apply knowledge and skill in:
  • Comply with federal, state, and local safety legal requirements including OSHA
  • Demonstrate techniques required when utilizing GMAW process
  • Demonstrate techniques required when utilizing FCAW process
  • Demonstrate knowledge and manipulative skills in the use of ER70S- 6electrode wire
  • Demonstrate knowledge and manipulative skills in the use of E71T-8 electrode wire
  • Perform various welds in F,V,H and OH positions
  • Complete with 75% accuracy an AWS SENSE Module 5 Exam
  • Complete with 75% accuracy an AWS SENSE Module 6 Exam
  • Be familiar with all student policies and procedures at the College of Southern Idaho
  • Successfully complete textbook assignments, quizzes and exams
  • Have a clear understanding of the demands associated with the welding profession
  • Demonstrate the proper attitude, appearance, and professionalism that assist an individual in being safe and successful as a welder
