SURT 161 Advanced Surgical Procedures

This course continues to build knowledge in more advanced surgical procedures including: neurological surgical procedures; thoracic surgical procedures, cardiovascular, peripheral vascular surgical procedures, and pediatric surgical procedures. Each of the areas of study will include a description, common procedure, surgical anatomy, common instrumentation and sutures used, and common medications administered.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course continues to build knowledge in more advanced surgical procedures including: neurological surgical procedures; thoracic surgical procedures, cardiovascular, peripheral vascular surgical procedures, and pediatric surgical procedures. Each of the areas of study will include a description, common procedure, surgical anatomy, common instrumentation and sutures used, and common medications administered.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • 1. Discuss preoperative routines in each of the surgical specialties.
  • 2. Be able to communicate the medical language and abbreviations of each of the human systems and related surgical procedures.
  • 3. Understand the role of the surgical tech during trauma, and the events leading up to the patients perioperative experience in trauma
  • 4. Demonstrate knowledge of computers in skills required to provide homework and assignments including internet searches, reports, word processing.
