PTAE 211 Data Collection*
Students develop competence in the skills of measurements used in physical therapy. The use of goniometers, blood pressure cuffs, grip meters, and other tools of measurement are included. Analyzing gait, posture, and measuring muscle strength are included. Lab assessments include the reporting of observable and measurable data and their significance to patient progress. Emphasis is given to effective oral and written communication for reporting and documentation.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Differentiate assessment processes and their importance in determining patient progress and modifying patient treatment programs in the context of the role and scope of physical therapist assistants including, but not limited to, conditions when treatment should not be administered.
- Apply data collection techniques such as Goniometry and Manual Muscle testing in a safe and effective manner
- Apply data collection skills such as anthropometric characteristics, pain ratings, gait and posture in a safe and effective manner.
- Document data collection methods appropriately in the SOAP format for clarity and consistency of patient treatments.
- Assess changes in data collection during a course of treatments with a patient and determine when it’s appropriate to report back to the Physical Therapist
- Develop strategies for determining when it is not appropriate to treat a patient and when it’s appropriate to progress a patient based off data that has been collected.
