PTAE 101 Physical Therapy In Health Care*

This course studies the role of physical therapy in the health care world. Discussions include the role of the physical therapist assistant (PTA), the relationship between the PTA and the physical therapist (PT), and the delivery of physical therapy care. An introduction to the "patient/client" and the overall health care team is included. Health care ethics, standards specific to physical therapist assistants, diverse patient populations, and other topics are explored. Only those students who have been accepted into the Physical Therapist Assistant Program are eligible to register for this course.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course studies the role of physical therapy in the health care world. Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Develop an appreciation for physical therapy – its roots, evolution, and the place of the PTA within its practice.
  • Explain the process of becoming a patient/client and helpful caregiving strategies.
  • Express understanding regarding effective communication skills – verbal, non-verbal, and in the role of teacher to patients/clients.
  • Describe physical therapy organizational structure and the basic business of patient care in diverse settings.
  • Select strategies for self-care and balance in the life of a health care provider.
  • Identify cultural sensitivity requirements in the physical therapy care environment.
