III. Catalog Course Description

Utilizing a combination of indoor pool sessions and actual experience on rivers, this course builds upon the foundation established in beginning kayaking. In addition to classroom work, emphasis is placed on refinement of paddle strokes and rolling techniques. This course includes a course fee.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify proper water sports etiquette around other sportsmen and watercraft
  • List 8 items of essential whitewater kayaking equipment and identify which are legally required
  • Safety knowledge and skills specifically needed for whitewater kayakers
  • How to read topographic maps, river flow and temperature charts, and weather maps
  • How to use specialized camping gear needed for self-support and group whitewater adventures
  • Intermediate rescue skills specifically related to kayaking including the z-drag
  • Knowledge of kayaking equipment needed for safe whitewater trips including boats, paddles, clothing cold water clothing, and rescue gear

a) Specific characteristics of whitewater kayaks (Creek boats, River Runners, Playboats)     b) Specialized safety gear for whitewater paddlers     c) Gear fitting specifics (boat padding, helmet fit, PFD fit, paddle sizing)     d) Intermediate paddle strokes for whitewater kayakers     e) Z-drags and knots for paddlers     f) Rescuing an injured paddler     g) emergency gear repair for kayakers     h) Group dynamics for paddlers     i) Topo maps and river flow data for kayakers     j) Kayak self-support for extended trips     k) Safety hand-signals for kayakers     Practicum: Class I and II river trip

Required Assignments

a) Demonstrate safe playboating paddle strokes to instructors       b) Safely move a hypothetically-injured swimmer from the center to the edge of the pool       c) Accurately throw and re-pack a kayak throw rope       d) Participate in day-long moving-water trip, Class I-II water      

Required Exams

a) Demonstrate one basic kayak roll to instructional staff     b) Demonstrate accurate throwing and proper re-packing of kayak throw bag     c) Show instructors the proper techniuques of rescuing an injured swimmer     d) Describe each of the key design elements of a whitewater kayak     e) Identify the key elements of a whitewater kayak un-pin kit     f) Construct a z-drag, use it to pull a static load, repack kit contents
