This is the second of two courses focused on developing students' writing skills in preparation for academic study. In this course, students will practice paragraph construction and essay development, with an emphasis on expository academic writing typical in college courses.

  • Write in English, beginning to use an appropriate academic register and with sufficient language accuracy to make him or herself understood
  • Construct sentences and paragraphs clearly and effectively
  • Combine paragraphs into more sophisticated compositions with introduction, body and conclusion
  • Recognize and follow standard U.S. academic writing conventions
  • Recognize and use formal academic grammar and vocabulary
  • Understand and appropriately vary sentence structure in writing
  • Begin to integrate information from outside sources with personal ideas and experiences
