CABW 104 Woodshop Foundations

This course examines the proper use and maintenance of hand tools, power tools and machinery in a woodshop setting. This course also offers an in-depth study of personal safety, safety to others and safety in the woodshop as well as remote worksites. Students will learn the safe handling of hazardous material and woodshop safety. This foundations course will also provide basic concepts in wood types, tree growth and concerns in machining.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course examines the proper use and maintenance of hand tools, power tools and machinery in a woodshop setting. This course also offers an in-depth study of personal safety, safety to others and safety in the woodshop as well as remote worksites. Students will learn the safe handling of hazardous material and woodshop safety. This foundations course will also provide basic concepts in wood types, tree growth and concerns in machining.    

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Understand and demonstrate the proper and safe use of lab equipment and tools
  • Understand lumber processing and the properties of various wood species
  • Repair defects in wood with different methods such fillers, scrap pieces and stains: water and heat
  • Know sanding techniques on soft and hardwoods, and differences on the species being sanded
  • Make layouts and patterns on wood
  • Demonstrate their competency of applications on small projects
