BUSA 215 Information Science and Data Management

This course combines lectures and hands-on learning of Microsoft Office applications and the Windows operating system to increase productivity within business and educational environments. The course emphasizes basic to intermediate skills for word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to improve data and file management and productivity within an organization. Some discussion of how various software components work together efficiently and effectively will be addressed. Access to a PC and a basic understanding of Windows is required.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course combines lectures and hands-on learning of Microsoft Office applications and the Windows operating system to increase productivity within business and educational environments. The course emphasizes basic to intermediate skills for word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to improve data and file management and productivity within an organization. Some discussion of how various software components work together efficiently and effectively will be addressed. Access to a PC and a basic understanding of Windows is required.

 

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Generate professional looking documents by applying formatting, headers, footers, borders, shading, tabs, indentation, citation, footnotes, clip art, and mail merge.
  • Produce spreadsheets ranging from formatting, functions, charting, formula construction, and pivot tables.
  • Implement databases structure ranging from design, data entry, forms, reports, and queries.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Manage files and folders, copy and move files and folders, and use the Recycle Bin. Create, save, and print a Microsoft Office 2013 document. Use the ribbon and dialog boxes to perform commands in Microsoft Office 2013. Create a flyer with a picture. Format text, paragraphs, and documents. Write a resume by using a Word table. Write a cover letter and use a template to create a cover sheet. Create a research paper that includes citations and a bibliography. Create a multiple-column newsletter and merged mailing labels. Create a sales report with an embedded column chart and sparklines. Calculate the value of an inventory. Analyze inventory by applying statistical and logical calculations to data and by sorting and filtering data. Summarize the data on multiple worksheets. Present fund data in a pie chart. Make projections by using what-if analysis and present projections in a line chart. Create pivot tables Create a new database. Create a database from a template. Sort and query a database. Create complex queries. Create forms to enter and delete records and to display data in a database. Create reports to display database information.
