NURP 115 Medication Administration for PN and Lab*

This course will assist the practical nursing student in learning safe medication administration across the lifespan. Emphasis will be on developing nursing knowledge in the calculation, preparation, safe administration, and documentation of multiple forms of drugs. The legal, ethical, and safety principles of medication are included, as well as the roles and competencies of the practical nurse as they relate to medication administration such as injectables, intravenous, oral, and other forms of parenteral drug delivery. This course includes both lecture and lab components.

III. Catalog Course Description

This course will assist the practical nursing student in learning safe medication administration across the lifespan. Emphasis will be on developing nursing knowledge in the calculation, preparation, safe administration, and documentation of multiple forms of drugs. The legal, ethical, and safety principles of medication are included, as well as the roles and competencies of the practical nurse as they relate to medication administration such as injectables, intravenous, oral, and other forms of parenteral drug delivery. This course includes both lecture and lab components.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Safely administer medications orally, topically, & other parenteral methods
  • Safely initiate intravenous access
  • Safely inject medications via subcutaneous, intradermal, or intramuscular routes
  • Identify appropriate sites for medication administration
  • Identify the six rights of medication administration

Required Assignments

Class attendance is expected. Laboratory attendance is mandatory.

Required Exams

There will be an instructor supervised student skill performance at the end of the course to ascertain safe medication administration. There are seven unit exams and one final exam which must average 70% or higher in order to pass the course and continue in the program. In addition, students must pass a dosage calculation exam at 90% or higher within three attempts in order to pass the course and continue in the program. Students will be required to complete a conversion quiz.
