III. Catalog Course Description
This course will cover; Defense Tactics - Arrest Techniques, Defense Tactics - Ground Control, Defense Tactics - Weapons Retention, Defense Tactics - Reactive Impact Weapons, Defense Tactics - Active Counter Measures, Building Search, Fire Arms, Emergency Water Safety, Traffic Stops, Traffic Control and Emergency Vehicle Operations.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe the importance of ethical and moral behavior associated with the Law Enforcement field as defined by the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training Council
- Recognize the various techniques and methods used by police officers including written and oral communication
- Know the Idaho law as it pertains to the criminal code, traffic code, criminal procedures and rules of evidence
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of law enforcement equipment
- Introduce students to problem resolution and decision making skills as they relate to the performance of police duties.
- Recognize and demonstrate the importance of physical and mental fitness as it relates to the law enforcement career field,
- Examine the various techniques of criminal investigation.

Identify the reasons defensive tactics training is necessary
Explain mental conditioning and mind set and the physiological effects of stress on the human body
Explain suspect/subject threat levels
Explain the concept of CRST(Control, Restraint, Search, Transport) as it relates to the overall AT curriculum
Identify the Idaho Codes relating to arrest control tactics
Explain the Civil Rights Amendment 1871, 42 USC, Section 1983, and who it applies to
Explain how Terry Vs Ohio to subject searches
Explain and demonstrate the principles of stance, footwork and movement as
they apply to general tactics and field interviewing
Explain and demonstrate the concepts of control
Explain and demonstrate the application and removal of handcuffs
Explain the principles and differences of frisks/pat downs vs searches and when
each is done
Demonstrate frisk and search techniques
Explain issues and procedures as they relate to transporting prisoners including
Positional Asphyxia
Strategies for emergency water safety
Explain and demonstrate the following ground control tactics:
a. Stand up properly
b. Guard position
c. Mounted position (Officer on Suspect)
d. Mounted position (Suspect on Officer)
Identify the reasons weapon retention training is necessary and demonstrate the techniques to accomplish this goal
Explain the concept of control in situations where impact tools are used
Demonstrate the correct deployment and use of various impact tools
Demonstrate principles of tactical movement
List the primary goals of a building search and demonstrate various search techniques
Explain and demonstrate the proper use, care and safety of firearms
