HREC 144 Beginning Cross-country Skiing

This is a beginning cross-country skiing course that is designed for participants of varying abilities. It will introduce you to Nordic ski equipment and the basic techniques used for skiing on groomed trails. Instruction will be suited for the beginning cross-country ski level, with opportunities to develop skills appropriate for more advanced terrain. Basic Nordic ski gear and transportation are provided.

III. Catalog Course Description

This is a beginning cross-country skiing course that is designed for participants of varying abilities. It will introduce you to Nordic ski equipment and the basic techniques used for skiing on groomed trails. Instruction will be suited for the beginning cross-country ski level, with opportunities to develop skills appropriate for more advanced terrain. IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the correct fit and function of Nordic ski equipment.
  • Perform drills that are intended to improve balance and weight transfer during skiing.
  • Demonstrate four elements of classical ski technique (double poling, poling with kick, diagonal stride, and herringbone).
  • Demonstrate the technique for getting up from a fall.
  • Demonstrate two methods of turning (step turn and wedge turn).
  • Demonstrate three methods of stopping (hockey stop, pole drag, and wedge stop).
