Plant Materials offers opportunities to study herbaceous and woody plants used for food, timber, drugs and ornamental landscapes both indoors and out. Students will research over 75 plants in depth to understand their identity, history and potential use in the landscape for different situations. Plant categories include native, indoor, medicinal, bedding, timber, nursery stock, and produce.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify 75 woody and herbaceous plants common to Idaho.
  • Identify and explain parts of plants used for naming and identification.
  • Recommend appropriate plant species for different unique landscape situations.
  • Explain value and purpose of plant choices within a landscape.
