III. Catalog Course Description

This course allows credit for the completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program at the journeyman level, equivalent to at least 6000 hours of training. It is intended for students completing the Applied Technology and Apprenticeship AAS.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of motors and controls.
  • Identify hazards associated with working with electricity and how to minimize or eliminate their potential for causing bodily injury.
  • Understand the theory and laws of electrical circuits and calculate electric power equations.
  • Identify the NEC requirements for "special" occupancies, equipment, and conditions.
  • Identify grounding and bonding requirements and size and select the proper equipment for these procedures.
  • Lay out electrical equipment in accordance with required working space and identify services and electrical equipment for single-family dwellings and commercial locations.
  • Recognize site plans, floor plans, elevations, sectional views, wiring diagrams, details and schedules found on electrical drawings.
  • Properly size the electric service for a dwelling, lay out branch circuits and outlet boxes, and select and install various wiring devices.
  • Select and install lighting fixtures for various applications and classify lighting by type of service and location.
