III. Catalog Course Description
This course will cover the beginnings of furniture making and design techniques. Students will build several different pieces of furniture to learn joinery applications as well as finishing techniques.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Understand how to begin to design from 15th to 18th century furniture
- Be able to make cutting lists and sketches of several pieces of furniture
- Know how to sharpen a spoke shave and wood chisel
- Have a knowledge and ability to distress furniture
- Understand how to make several wood joints used in furniture construction
- Know how to make wooden drawer slides
- Be familiar with machining techniques for antique furniture construction
- Know the basics of pattern making
- Know how to work around wood movements in the designing of furniture
- Know the basics of preparation for stain and painted finishes
- Know the basics of Gesso finishes, stained and color finishes
- Have the ability to build a distressed furniture piece from beginning to end
- Have the ability to complete at least three projects using various finish techniques
