III. Catalog Course Description

Students who have completed a year of study in ceramics can pursue a more self-directed course of exploration by taking this course. Students may accumulate a maximum of 6 credit hours in this area.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• The ability to successfully and skillfully use hand-building and wheel throwing techniques.
• The ability to combine techniques, such as coil, slab, and wheel throwing.
• The ability to embellish the surface of objects in an expressive and meaningful ways using slips and glazes; and to understand the basic terms related to glaze chemistry.
• The ability to discuss, in an articulate thoughtful manner, during class critiques the meaning, design and technical processes used to create ceramic art objects.
• Understand the differing strategies and outcomes for the various firing methods and techniques (electric, gas) and reduction vs. oxidation.
