AQUA 205 Water Quality in Aquaculture

.AQUA 205 is an introduction to water quality in flow through and recirculating aquaculture systems. This course includes a comprehensive study of the relationship of water quality and production of fish. Water quality management will be demonstrated by manipulating water flows, feeding schedules, stocking densities, aeration, oxygen supplementation, and bio filters. Students will learn to use water testing equipment to monitor water quality.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to accurately measure and regulate water flows using weirs, time fill method and containers.
  • Interpret a water qualitytesting kit to measure basic water quality.
  • Select feeding schedules according to water flows and stocking densities.
  • Experiment with a recirculating aquaculture system and a bio-filter.
  • Operate hatchery procedures to best meet waste management guidelines.
  • Evaluate water quality in live haul tanks for long distance fish haul transport.
  • Identify signs of stress in fish due to water quality issues.
