ISMT 200 Competent Climber

Competent Climber will provide students the required skills and information to safely climb and navigate wind turbine towers, commercial structures, and residential structures in addition to performing individual and team rescue from heights. Students will be required to climb a wind turbine tower and/or commercial/residential structure as a component of this course. This course is very physically demanding.

III. Catalog Course Description

Competent Climber will provide students the required skills and information to safely climb and navigate wind turbine towers, commercial structures, and residential structures in addition to performing individual and team rescue from heights. Students will be required to climb a wind turbine tower and/or commercial/residential structure as a component of this course. This course is very physically demanding.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify the governing agency and regulations applicable to working at heights and fall protection
  • Cite the effects of the fall force matrix
  • Define the Fall Protection Paradigm
  • Properly identify, inspect, and don fall prevention equipment
  • Properly identify, inspect, and don fall arrest equipment
  • Demonstrative Outcomes:
  • Ascend a 300 foot wind turbine, stand on top of the nacelle, enter the hub, and descend safely
  • Ascend and descend a 0 foot commercial building safely
  • Calculate fall clearance
  • Perform an assisted ladder rescue using any given rescue device
  • Perform an assisted low angle rescue using any given rescue device
  • Perform an assisted high angle rescue using any given rescue device
  • Perform a low angle self-rescue using any given rescue device
  • Perform a high angle self-rescue using any given rescue device
