POE-362 Gender and Development
Worldwide, men and women play different economic
roles. These differences are especially
pronounced in poor countries, in which the
division of labor is often determined in large
part by gender. The project of international
development, originating after WWII and the
process of decolonization, was initially blind to
the gendered nature of social and economic
systems in poor countries, resulting in poorly
crafted development interventions. This course
considers the different ways that development
interventions affect men and women, and traces
gendered effects of development initiatives as
the attitudes of development organizations have
changed over time.
