Kean University offers a wide variety of minor programs that focus on specific areas of study. A minor is an optional program taken in addition to the major program of study in order to complement or augment the major, or to develop a second concentration of study. Career opportunities or professional competence may be enhanced through completion of a minor program. Students should consult with their advisors for information about integration of minors with their major programs.
A minor consists of a minimum of 18 semester hours. A minor may be in a single academic discipline or (effective Fall 2014) may be interdisciplinary in nature. If a minor is in a single academic discipline, students majoring in that academic discipline may not minor in that same discipline.
The content of each minor is prescribed by an academic program and may or may not include electives. A minimum of six semester hours must be from upper division, 3000-4000 level courses. Only courses with a “C” (2.0) grade or better may be applied to the minor. Some minor programs have additional minimum grade and/or minimum GPA requirements.
No more than one-half of the credits for the minor may be transferred from another institution. No more than one-half of the credits for a minor may be from courses that are being used to fulfill major requirements (including second major requirements). Note that duplicate credit is not awarded in cases where a course is fulfilling more than one type of requirement.
Effective Fall 2016, students seeking admission to minor programs should use the Major/Minor Status Change Form available online in the Forms and Policies section of the Registrar's website . The completed form must be signed by the Executive Director, Chairperson, or Coordinator responsible for the minor program and then submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
At the time of filing for graduation, the academic Department or School offering the minor program must verify and sign off that all requirements are met. Verification of the completion of the minor must then be filed with the Registrar’s Office. Minors will be designated on students’ transcripts.
