This course provides an overview of the special education profession, including the history of special education, legal background, current laws, regulations, and court rulings, as well as instruction concerning the complete IEP process.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Discuss the bases and history of special education.
- Apply the information learned about federal special education requirements to applicable cases and situations.
- Develop a timeline of historic legislation affecting special education services.
- Articulate the concepts of a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).
- Discuss the issues surrounding the importance of a nondiscriminatory evaluation.
- List the components of an IEP and understand the justification behind the inclusion of each of the components.
- Define the least restrictive environment and discuss its importance in providing special education services.
- Apply the concept of least restrictive environment as found in IDEA to sample cases.
- Explain the importance of procedural due process.
