This course is designed to aid students in developing skills to identify rangeland plants in the field. Focus is on identification of grasses, forbs, and shrubs in natural settings. Exploration will include ecosystem roles of wildland plants and developing site descriptions. This course includes a 4-day field trip at the beginning of the fall semester.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Recognize definitive plant characteristics of about 60 major plants on western rangelands.
  • State the scientific name of plants observed in class and family/tribe in which they are classified.
  • Describe rangeland sites including location, topographic features, and major plants present.

Assessment Strategy Narrative

1. Recognize definitive plant characteristics of about 60 major plants on western rangelands.

Assessment: This skill will be verified in four tests to identify live or freshly collected plants.

2.   State the scientific name of plants observed in class and family/tribe in which they are classified.

Assessment: Tests will examine student ability to list scientific name and classification of plants observed on the field trip.

3.   Describe rangeland sites including location, topographic features, and major plants present.

Assessment: Conduct several site assessments and write site descriptions.
