IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Describe the settings, duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician.
  • Exhibit knowledge of pharmaceutical standards, ethics, laws and regulations, electronic medical records, e-prescribing, pharmacy ordering and receiving, management of outdated and recalled pharmaceuticals, billing third party payers, and quality-assurance procedures.
  • Perform calculations required to fill prescription and medication orders utilizing metric, apothecary, household and avoirdupois systems.
  • Describe sterile and non-sterile compounding regulations and procedures.
  • Discuss infection control and requirements for handling disposal of pharmaceutical and hazardous wastes.
  • List brand and generic names of the most commonly ordered prescription drugs, their uses, mechanism of action, and side effects.
