HREC 148 Intermediate Kayaking*

Utilizing a combination of indoor pool sessions and actual experience on rivers, this course builds upon the foundation established in beginning kayaking. In addition to classroom work, emphasis is placed on refinement of paddle strokes and rolling techniques. This course includes a course fee.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

Identify proper water sports etiquette around other sportsmen and watercraft
List 8 items of essential whitewater kayaking equipment and identify which are legally required
Safety knowledge and skills specifically needed for whitewater kayakers
How to read topographic maps, river flow and temperature charts, and weather maps
How to use specialized camping gear needed for self-support and group whitewater adventures
Intermediate rescue skills specifically related to kayaking including the z-drag
Knowledge of kayaking equipment needed for safe whitewater trips including boats, paddles, clothing cold water clothing, and rescue gear
